Singer/songwriter Daniel Rachel is a complicated soul. Cocksure enough to write a song called In My Life, on Letter To A Soldier he lacks sufficient confidence to completely escape Bob Dylan’s shadow. But when he gets it right- which is often- Rachel proves to be a songwriter of poise and panache. Meet Me At The Bridge nods fashionably at Jeff Buckley, but also references Al Green, while Free My Mind could be a ragged early Stones. The understated Child of The Universe, meanwhile, is a song of everyman emotive power Robbie Williams should seriously consider covering it. ***
