Daniel Rachel, praise the Lord, isnt the new Bob Dylan, but he might just be the new Cat Stevens-meets-Al Stewart. With assistance mainly from the lead guitar of his good chum Marc Olivier, Dan The Man strums effectively through an assortment of pleasingly naïve tunes about dying soldiers, dusty roads and the children of the universe, hardly original but satisfyingly sincere. Theres an almost Jonathon Richmanesque humour about the highly hummable Mamma Cha Cha (Doo Doo Wah), especially when he doesnt quite make the notes hes aiming for. Ultimately, though, theres a core of affectingly honest material here, delivered with minimum of pretension and production that suggest Rachels in it for the long run rather than the instant hit. Then again, if The White Stripes and Afroman can make a significant chart impact, he should be in with a shout. JOHNNY
