Shadows and Dust

By the riverbank, by the picture house, by the whorehouse, where the ladies drink
Where the snow fell hard, then left no doubt, what was there before now space
On the skating rink, where the children played, to the shouts and screams because it's holidays
And what split the ice and drew the crowds, to see the river flow and sweep her away

Shadows and Dust all that's left of our loved ones

For her birthday, she was a princess in a fairy dress and pigtails
As the candles smoked, she made her wish to the Holy Ghost, keep me happy like this
They came in white to celebrate and went home in black to pray;
That the river flows, with a gentle hand, to a better place, for our loved ones

Shadows and Dust all that's left of our loved ones

In memory, they left a tree, a willow tree, in memory
With a daffodil at its base, for the sun to reach, for the sun to reach

Shadows and Dust all that's left of our loved ones

Apparently Enid Blyton could look up from her typewriter and see an imaginary scene take place before her- she then just watched and typed. This has worked for me once. The back drop was heavily influenced by Robert Altman's film 'McCabe and Mrs Miller'.
