Hotel Room

It was a long afternoon in a hotel room
Amongst the sheets of desire and a strange perfume
Behind a locked door standing on a wooden floor
Where your dress slipped down and I had what I saw
Oh this love, like the first bluebells of the spring
Like the first in a line of kings
Play the game, give no names, have no fortune, have no fame
Keep your locket in your pocket and your spark in its socket
We can dream any dream, we can sow any seam
We can shine, we can sheen, we will hide, we will scheme
Oh this love, like the pouring of sand from the hand
To the beat and the bass of the band
Won't you stab this sorry heart
Love tearing us apart
Stab this sorry heart

Knowing what we know now, would we dared to have bowed
Down to lust of gold and the thorny crown
For the hearts they will break, for the risks that you take
When you go back home to make the love you fake
For this love, like the first drop of rain from the sky
And the first dropped tear that we cry
It's like the pouring of sand from the hand
To the beat and the bass of the band
It's like the first bluebells of the spring
And like the first in a line of kings
Is this the way that love is meant to be mamma
Is this the way that love is meant to be

Lyrically inspired by the paintings of Edward Hopper. I saw an exhibition of his at Tate Modern and was blown away by his brilliance, so much so I bought a quite expensive book of Hopper prints which then fell off the back of my scooter and was battered by a passing car.
